Taipei City becomes the first city in the country to improve the handicapped facilities by subsidizing existing housing
To lessen the pressure on funding handicapped facilities for the residents of Taipei, Taipei City is the first to announce the plan “Taipei City handicapped facilities by subsidizing existing housing improvement plan”, covering 45% of the expense with governmental subsidies.
Mr. Chang, the chief officer at Taipei City Construction Management Office, said that the “public buildings” category is the residential collection that has over six floors or below five floors with over 50 housing units. According to the provisions, it should improve both indoor and outdoor accessibility, set up ramps, handrails and exits, as well as lifting equipment and other handicap facilities. All of these measures ensure the friendly usability for the disabled, the elderly, pregnant women, women with children, and those who have mobility issues. Ever since 2012, Taipei City Construction Management Office has check-listed a set of residential inventory in regard to its accessibility for the disabled, in order to promote better improvement and its subsidy plan. This will further decrease the burden of funding on the residents.
Mr. Chang emphasized that to increase residents’ understanding of improvement funding for disabled facilities, Taipei City Construction Management Office and the Taiwan Architecture and Building Center will conduct a seminar session at 9:30 AM on June 25th at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (No. 43, Keelung Rd. Section 4). During the seminar, the latest and most accurate information on disabled services and application for subsidy process will be available.
